There are very few 4×4 drivers who are either all off-road or all on-road. The vast majority of us prefer our vehicles to find the perfect middle ground between the two – a beast on the green lanes and a refined and comfortable drive on the motorway. That’s why all-terrain tyres are such a wise investment for most off-road hobbyists.

While you might assume a set of all-terrain (AT) tyres would offer little more than a “jack-of-all-trades” performance, there are dozens of brands that offer comfortable, low-noise solutions that are also durable and sturdy enough to take on rough terrain. It’s a combination of a tough grip and a smooth ride that will offer you the traction you need to pull a caravan or climb a hill and the smoothness to provide a comfortable ride to and from work.

So, without further ado, here are some of the very best all-terrain tyres on the market.

BF Goodrich KO2

This powerful American AT tyre has an incredibly high load capacity and a sidewall that is twice as strong as its competitors. It also boasts a very distinctive tread pattern. It’s not the best-performing tyre when it comes to off-road performance but if you are only going to be venturing off-road every once in a while this could be a great option.

Michelin LTX 2

A balanced choice with a pleasantly soft tread pattern, this tyre is excellent on sand and is perhaps the most controlled and comfortable AT tyre on the list when it comes to road driving. This makes it an ideal candidate for those that rarely take their 4×4 off-road.

Firestone Destination

With clean, symmetrical treads, this American tyre is perhaps your best bet if you travel regularly on gravel. It’s a perfectly balanced tyre at an affordable price but it’s not going to give you world-beating performance.

Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure

While it’s only been available on European shores for a few years, the Adventure has already made a name for itself due to its high strength, which is achieved through the use of a belt of heavy-duty steel and two layers of aramid that increase the rigidity of the structure and the grip of the tire on the road. It also uses proprietary “Durawall” technology that enhances the strength of the sidewalls.

Pirelli Scorpion

Everything about this Italian tyre screams premium quality; from the soft tread pattern to the high dry and wet performance that means it’s not only responsive but reliable in any kind of weather. For those that split their road to off-road driving 80/20, this is perhaps the perfect option.

Whichever tyres you opt for, you’re going to want some 4×4 tyre accessories stored away in your glove compartment in case the worst should happen. An air hose and a deflator should be at the top of your checklist as well as a good old fashioned tyre repair kit. You could even invest in a tyre pump that can be controlled via your phone.

With the right AT tyres and the right accessories to keep them inflated you should be able to tackle most surfaces with ease, whether freshly paved or ancient gravel.
