There really is nothing like enjoying a trip on the open road. There are after all so many destinations around the world that are better explored on four wheels. With solo travel also becoming increasingly popular – according to this recent research, 37% of travellers prefer to go it alone – there’s nothing holding you back from taking on that epic 4×4 trip!

For all the perks of travelling solo, you’ll need to indulge in a little extra planning to ensure you can enjoy every part of your trip fully and safely. Read on to discover our top tips for planning the perfect solo 4×4 trip…

Plan your route

With the sheer number of off-roading hotspots, solo travellers are spoilt for choice when planning their itinerary. Planning a route however, even a loose one, matters more than ever when travelling alone.

Start with the destination before zoning in on the places you want to go and the sights you want to see. Do your research to delve deeper into how much time is enough to spend exploring your stops to ensure the itinerary is realistic and enjoyable.

Booking a few attractions or places to stay along the way can keep you on track to help you make the most of your time on the road.

Manage driving time

When planning your route, determining the amount of driving time that works for you is a crucial part of the puzzle.

The amount of time you spend behind the wheel of your 4×4 should get you to where you want to be without making the driving itself tedious. Too much driving will ultimately take the fun out of your solo road trip. Here The Road Trip Expert shares guidance for planning your driving time thoughtfully:

“Make sure the distance between these two places is manageable given the total driving distance and any locations en route where you plan to spend additional time. Try to think about how far you would be required to drive on your ‘driving days’… Plan one day at a time on the map and on your planning document. For each day include the start point, end point, driving distance, and places you will visit.”

Stock up on supplies

The joy of travelling by 4×4 is that you can hit the road with confidence, take on pretty much any trail, and pitch up in the most rugged destinations if that’s where your itinerary is taking you! But, and this is a BIG but, this all depends on having the right supplies on board.

Thankfully, we stock a number of accessories to make the organisation and storage of your supplies as simple and straightforward as it should be. This includes 4×4 fridge freezers and camping gear to help you create a home away from home whatever the destination or your chosen route.

Add the necessary upgrades

Your 4×4 should also be prepared for anything with the right upgrades. Solo travellers need to be particularly focused on self-rescue upgrades that allow them to recover their vehicle single handedly if necessary. Check out these recovery essentials every 4×4 should have to get started.
