Awnings are excellent investments for so many reasons. The added sun, wind and rain protection; increased privacy; and essential coverage awnings provide make them an ideal upgrade for a wide range of scenarios as Practical Motoring details:

“Whether you’re down at the park watching the kids play footy when it starts to drizzle, or you’re out and about in the scrub and you need to get out of the sun to enjoy some lunch, all you have to do is roll out your awning, extend some poles and voila… instant shelter. Awnings are also a great place to roll out your swag when the weather takes a turn for the worse.”

One size however certainly doesn’t fit all! As you’ll discover when browsing our collection of awnings and accessories, there are several awning types on the market. Here we take a closer look at the different types of awnings available and the benefits they unlock when added to your 4×4.

The awning room

As one of the most popular awning types, the awning room provides the most coverage, so much so that it can be used as a tent as well as for daytime privacy.

Offering a four-wall enclosure, our Easy-Out Awning Room by Front Runner – available in 2-metre and 2.5-metre – is a great option for those in the market for a 4×4 awning. Suitable for leisure, camping, off-road and motorhome use, this easy-to-assemble awning provides a sturdy structure whatever your surroundings.

Its windows and door are equipped with fly screens and canvas flaps for vital protection from the elements and those pesky critters.

The awning

The traditional awning structure may not be fully enclosed but does provide great coverage, not to mention a quick and easy setup. The Easy-Out Awning is water repellent and UV resistant, providing the perfect shelter for a table and chairs set.

The awning cover is supported by lightweight yet durable poles, which can be inserted into the ground for secure placement. These poles can be extended up to 2.4 metres to accommodate taller vehicles.

Additional front and side panels can be added to the awning to turn the shelter into a tent or windbreak in minutes. If you overland or camp regularly, this awning’s carry bag can be permanently attached to your vehicle for easy setup on the go.

The inner tent

Enjoy the best of both worlds by investing in an awning with an inner tent. Our Dometic HUB 2 Inner Tent is made for comfort, convenience and privacy, with the sleeping area provided by this awning’s inner tent extremely practical for solo tourers.

The tent itself is made from breathable cotton, which means you’ll always have a great night’s sleep wherever you pitch up for the night.

The mosquito net

For 4×4 drivers taking on warmer climes – like the ones found on these desert trails for 4x4s – a fully enclosed awning room certainly won’t be the best fit. An awning room made from mosquito nets however is another story!

Mosquito nets unlock many benefits in some parts of the world. Keeping these blood-sucking insects at bay can be a never-ending challenge, but with our Front Runner Easy-Out Awning Mosquito Net, you can enjoy a mosquito-free zone.

The connection tunnel

Ensuring vehicle access from your awning or awning room, the Dometic HUB VW Connection Tunnel is an affordable awning accessory that can personalise your camping experience. The tunnel simply zips onto your vehicle or campervan to unlock the extra space you need to enjoy life on the road your way.
