The land down under is unique when it comes to off-roading potential. It’s a vast country with hundreds of miles of mostly untouched desert,
stretching across the great outback. As such, it’s become known as the unofficial home of off-road adventures.
Given the sheer size and scope of Australia, however, it’s incredibly easy to get lost if you don’t have a destination in mind.
And while getting lost in nature is half the fun of off-roading, in the outback getting lost could be a pretty terrifying prospect. Anyone who has ever seen Wolf Creek could no doubt contest as much!
So, we’ve decided to focus on not only the most beautiful and challenging tracks and trails but the regions you probably won’t find yourselves getting too lost in for our run-down of the best off-road destinations in Australia.
The Great Australian Bight
If you enjoy giving on the edge. Literally. Then the Great Australian Bight is probably going to be your holy grail as far as off-road adventures are concerned.
Not only is the incredibly rocky area famous for its wildlife (kangaroos, seals, dolphins, you name it) but it’s known for being the location of the longest continual sea cliffs in the world.
The remote coastal scenery is among the most incredible sights and there’s plenty of opportunities for exhilarating sand driving too.
Corner Country in New South Wales
I know we said the outback was a pretty inhospitable place (and it is) but situated right in the northwest corner of the NSW region is the exception that proves the rule.
Regarded by locals as the ‘true outback’, this area has a fascinating aboriginal history to absorb and some of the most easy-going off-road driving you’re likely to find. Beware though, it’s very very hot.
The Simpson Desert
The red sands and wide-open skies of this desert region mean it is highly regarded by locals as an area of isolation for deep reflection and admiring the wonder of nature.
But that’s not to say it’s not also the site of some of the world’s best off-roading opportunities. The sand dunes here will give even the most tricked-out off-road vehicles a run for their money, so make sure you have some decent upgraded suspension before you even think about it.
Victorian High Country
If you think you’ve seen everything the world of off-road adventure has to offer and are up for a true challenge then this is the place for you.
Just a short drive away from Melbourne you’ll find some of the hilliest and most punishing off-road courses in the world but they are more than worth the effort.
You’ll be treated to some stunning greenery that couldn’t be further away from the harsh desert landscape Australia is perhaps best known for.
Alice Springs in the Northern Territory
Finally, if you just want to put the pedal to the metal and floor it across hundreds of miles of red sand then get yourself to Alice Springs and the world-famous Uluru, also known as Ayers Rocks.
There’s a reason why this landscape has inspired countless books, movies, and album covers and the terrain surrounding it is just begging to be torn up.
