There are some pieces of equipment that you just shouldn’t be without if you’re a fan of off-road and overland travel, and the air compressor certainly falls into this category!

As an onboard air essential, it has countless uses when adventuring off the beaten track. In this blog post, we explore what those applications are, which benefits an air compressor unlocks, and how to choose the right air compressor for your requirements.

Made for every off-road scenario

An air compressor has many, many uses – a fact that means you’re covered whatever challenges you encounter during your travels. In addition to being able to air down your tyres at a moment’s notice to get a better handle on your terrain, an ARB air compressor is particularly helpful during recovery. Here EV Powered explains how:

“We’ve all experienced it; you’re getting through a particularly difficult stretch of terrain and you notice a lack of grip or that your off-road vehicle feels sluggish. You get out and check the tires and notice that they have taken a beating. Having an ARB air compressor in this situation gives you quick and effective inflation. You can get your tires pumped back up to an off-road standard and move on with your adventure.”

By adjusting the pressure of your tyres with the help of an ARB air compressor, you can take on anything when travelling both on the road and off. You’ll also reduce the risk of tyre damage, boost ride quality and comfort, and support the use of other off-roading essentials such as air lockers.

The ultimate air compressor?

When shopping for an air compressor that’s going to unlock the benefits above, there’s one brand that sits heads and shoulders above the rest.

ARB is responsible for the design, development and supply of countless 4×4 accessories, including their renowned air compressors, and with more than 45 years of experience, your adventure is in the best hands. When compared with other air compressors and tyre inflators, ARB air compressors provide everything you need to alter pressure on the go.

Their durability, reliability, efficiency and portability also make ARB air compressors essential accessories for every off-roader.

Brushed or brushless?

There are two types of ARB air compressors to choose from, brushed or brushless, and both offer their advantages. But, what’s the difference and which is better for you?

The main differences are found in the motor of the air compressor. As the name suggests, brushed air compressors incorporate carbon brushes that deliver crucial electrical current to create the magnetic fields the motor needs to turn. Brushless compressors forgo this process, using an electronic controller and magnets to spin the rotor.

We stock both brushed and brushless ARB compressors here at 4×4 Works. Due to their longer lifespan, fewer wear parts and minimal maintenance, our brushless designs are considered more efficient. They even boast 50% higher output!

Brushless compressors are also quieter and cooler to run, unlike brushed alternatives which produce friction, heat and electrical noise.
