Suspension kits are fundamental to enhancing your ride. When reviewing the benefits of upgrading your 4WD’s suspension, however, it has to be acknowledged that it is as important on road as it is off-road.

Helping your vehicle’s suspension to work smarter, not harder, can solve a long list of common suspension problems to ensure the advantages of quality, performance-orientated suspension can be reaped by all.

Still not sure whether upgrading your suspension is the right next step for you? Read on to discover why great suspension matters, the common suspension problems it could fix, and the suspension upgrades you have to explore.

The importance of 4×4 suspension

The right suspension upgrade can make a huge difference to your performance, comfort and handling both on the road and off. It’s the key to better tyre clearance, improved load-carrying capabilities and improved towing characteristics when towing to name but a few perks of switching your OE suspension for a premium aftermarket upgrade.

The plus points just keep on coming when taking your vehicle off-road as Jim Beam Racing explains:

“4WD suspension systems are specifically designed to improve handling when off-roading, dampen the vibrations felt and absorb impact after going over bumps or driving over rough terrain. They assist with stability by ensuring all the wheels are constantly in contact with the ground… A quality suspension system will increase the tyres’ contact with the driving surface and improve the load-carrying capacity of your 4×4.”

Common suspension issues you need to fix…

With time and continued use, even the best quality OE suspension can become fatigued or fail. Strangely, those factory originals aren’t cut out for off-roading, heavy load carrying or towing, which can lead to uneven height, front and rear sagging, and an unstable and unsafe ride.

Common 4×4 suspension problems don’t end there. Essential suspension components like shock absorbers will fail, with good performance and controlled stops things of the past. While your suspension system’s leaf springs are generally the last component to be affected, they too are subject to failure, with worn leaf springs causing a reduction in ride height and breaks able to be identified by knocking or rattling noises.

If your vehicle’s suspension system uses coil springs, these are even more prone to thinning and breakage. Reduced ride height, poor load-carrying capacity, handling problems, accelerated tyre wear, and loss of control under heavy acceleration or braking are all tell-tale signs that your coil springs require replacement.
