Practically speaking, you’re probably going to need a decent roof rack for your 4×4 at some point, particularly if you’re travelling with a roof tent and plan on doing a lot of long-distance off-roading. But while we’d always recommend sticking to the more reliable off-road quality roof racks such as those built by ARB or Front Runner, there are many different options to consider that will be suitable for every budget and every need.

Here, we’ll be taking you through the various types of roof racks available for 4×4 owners who need a little more storage space. Although, the great thing about roof racks is that they can potentially be so much more than just storage space.

Deluxe/basket roof racks

These are, as the name suggests, a substantial option that looks a little like a shallow basket. These roof racks are built to carry heavy loads in demanding conditions. Some are fitted by drilling into the roof of the vehicle itself while others are either gutter-mounted (where vehicles have existing gutters) or bolted onto other existing mounting points. If you want maximum security for your luggage and adequate weight displacement then the deluxe or basket roof rack option is always a sensible choice.

Trade roof racks

Trade roof racks are open at the front and rear to allow for ladders to be attached. This makes them useful not only for rooftop tents but for easy access, as it can be difficult to access certain roof racks without a little help. These options are available in various lengths and widths and for vehicles with or without gutters. They also allow for several roof rack accessories that allow for more specific tailoring. For example, accessories that allow jerry cans to be held securely, wind deflectors and awnings. There are also touring or tail row racks available which are open at the front or rear only.

Flat roof racks

The bare minimum option for those that might want a quality roof rack to carry their fishing gear, luggage for a holiday or perhaps a canoe or bike, these are flat racks with a mesh floor that are simple to install and can accommodate a range of items.

Base rack

The new ARB Base Rack system is an incredibly exciting modular system that can essentially be all things to all people. This is an entirely new kind of roof rack that can be personalised to suit your needs. It incorporates a revolutionary dovetail mounting system that could change the way roof racks are designed and built for 4×4 vehicles in years to come.

Roof rack accessories

Most of these racks can be outfitted with a range of more specific accessories that allow for help in transporting almost anything. If you love going cycling, for example, there are accessories geared towards attaching your bikes to your roof rack safely and the same is true for paddle boards and canoes. There are also cargo bags, boxes and baskets that can give you more space to store extra luggage. Finally, if you plan to purchase a roof tent then be aware that most vehicles will require a suitable rack to mount the tent to.
