MAD Automotive was established in 1976 in De Klomp in the Netherlands, byEgbert and Emmy Meindertsma. Although the company is widely known the acronym MAD, the company is correctly called Meindertsma Automaterialen De Klomp.

Egbert and Emmy were running a small but successful car parts business in De Klomp, which is a small village right in the middle of the Netherlands. Egbert had noticed that more and more cars were starting to run LPG tanks in the interests of economy, but this extra rear-end weight was causing suspension problems – all the more so once additional load and luggage was added to the vehicle. This led Egbert to design and develop the first widely available range of helper springs.

Helper springs are designed to assist the primary suspension springs, and to progressively take more load when needed. Most commonly, helper springs are a smaller format of coil spring which sits inside the vehicle’s factory standard rear suspension coils. This new product offered a simple, low-cost and low-tech solution and before long, demand for MAD helper springs was growing across Europe. As the product became more and more popular and the company grew and hired new technicians and product designers, the focus slowly moved onto another new solution which met a similar need: air bag suspension.

MAD developed and sold a wide range of helper air bags for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, motorhomes and 4×4. This product range has been popular across Europe for decades now, and is perhaps best known in the motorhome and camper van market segment.

As the company continued to innovate and expand, many new products were developed and launched. Slowly, the business moved into sectors including wheelchair transport and loading, car transport, animal transport, ambulance equipment, brake disc alignment equipment and eventually loading cranes.

The loading crane product range has proved extremely popular and is used for loading freight into vans and lorries, from the Transit, Crafter and Sprinter to lorries and trailers. In most cases, the crane is mounted to the inside of the vehicle roof with a purpose-designed frame and full electronic control is provided as standard to enable the crane to move in and out of the vehicle and to lift and lower a range of freight. Loads including timber, barrels, engines and drivetrains, machinery and more can be quickly and safely loaded into and out of a vehicle, without the need for additional personnel or fork lifts.

4×4 Works are proud to be an approved retailer of MAD products in the UK and Europe. We operate in various sectors and can offer fitting and repairs to MAD loading products. As a company, MAD are always innovating and improving their products and you can be confident that any products in their diverse range are designed and tested in a wide range of conditions and environments.
