As well as being exciting and exhilarating, negotiating the overland trails that can only be explored on four wheels unlocks plenty of stunning scenery. Keeping these natural sights in tact for fellow off-roading enthusiasts to enjoy for years to come is part and parcel of being a responsible 4×4 driver. There are many steps you can take to reduce trail impact when venturing off-road, including the following…

Pack the right supplies

The supplies you take along on your overlanding adventure can make all the difference to your overall experience. Choosing them carefully and with the environment in mind, however, will mean you start your excursion on the right foot and with minimal impact.

When packing, reduce your dependence on plastic and/or single-use products, and instead opt for eco-friendlier, natural, reusable alternatives. Buy local and organic where possible to support the environment and the communities that surround your home or off-road destination.

Choose quality above all else

If your off-road trip involves a few overnight stays, your camping gear should also be carefully scrutinised.

We can’t stress enough how important quality is when purchasing camping equipment that will create a home from home even when you’re far away. Inspired Camping explains more about why having reliable gear at your disposal matters:

“Camping is supposed to blur the lines between domestic living and total immersion with nature. Having reliable camping gear on hand will allow you to enjoy it all, without the drama that will tilt the experience one way or another. Designed to withstand the elements and rough conditions, your camping gear will not need to be replaced very often. This means you can simply pack up your camping gear and tent, and have it ready to go…”

Change the way you camp

Whether you’re due for a refresh of your camping supplies or want to invest in high-quality gear that’ll last you a lifetime, changing the way you camp should be a consideration. One debate that rages on in the camping market is whether you should go for a ground or roof tent?

By choosing to camp above ground – i.e. on top of your 4×4 vehicle courtesy of one of our premium roof tents – you can unlock many benefits, including better safety, security, comfort and convenience. With a rooftop tent, you’ll also enjoy the perks of a solid base while reducing your carbon footprint.

In addition to switching your ground tent for a rooftop alternative, altering a few camping habits can lessen trail impact dramatically. Reduce your water usage on the road and before you set off by forgoing that pre-departure vehicle wash and switching off the valve on your water tank when you brush your teeth or wash.

Inflate your 4×4’s tyres

When travelling from A to B during your off-road adventure, there’s another easy way to reduce the impact your 4×4 has on the trail itself. Using an air compressor to inflate your tyres means less contact with the trail and reduced environmental damage. You could also adjust your itinerary to drive fewer miles every day to lower carbon emissions.
