With the weather getting warmer that thirst for adventure is returning. Whether you’re an off-roading beginner or a seasoned pro, choosing the destination of your overlanding trip wisely is a top priority. Thankfully, 2023 offers no shortage of fantastic trails and remote wildernesses to explore.

In this blog post, we reveal the top off-road destinations that should be on your hit list during the year ahead.

Strata Florida, Wales

You don’t have to travel too far from home to find excellent off-roading. Experience Green Laning at its most challenging right on your doorstep by visiting Strata Florida in Wales. Better known for its medieval abbey, this enchanting part of western Wales offers stunning scenery of the Cambrian Mountains as well as the chance to put your off-road driving skills to the test.

Suitable for experienced 4×4 drivers with well-prepared vehicles only, the byway takes you through the heart of the mountain range between Pontrhydfendigaid and Abergwesyn.

Mojave Road, USA

With a generous 140-mile trail to explore, Mojave Road – a route that takes you from Arizona to California – is among the most diverse off-road destinations on the planet.

By taking on Mojave Road, you’ll work your way across mountain passes, dense forests, expansive lakes, volcanic areas and desert valleys. Again, you’ll need experience and an upgraded vehicle to negotiate the rougher terrain found across some parts of this trail.

4×4 Paradise also recommends taking extra precautions to handle some of the area’s less-friendly creatures and conditions:

“This area is filled with snakes, so if you get out and explore you must look out for poisonous snakes. You also should bring plenty of water to avoid dehydration, especially if you are getting out and exploring the area. If you go in winter, there are certain areas you will drive through where, in order to stay safe, you will need to know the weather and road conditions, so always check those beforehand.”

Tasmania, Australia

Australia is another country that’s held in high esteem by overlanding adventurers. Instead of visiting the mainland for your upcoming excursion, however, venture to the west coast of Tasmania.

Here you’ll find untamed wilderness and uninhibited remoteness that is primed to be explored on four wheels. From wild rivers to dense forests to rugged coastlines, Tasmania is an off-roading paradise.

Muscat, Oman

Those looking for a multi-stop off-road destination that they can really get their teeth into should travel to Muscat in Oman. From there, you can explore countless trails, with wild camping spots aplenty on the route. This varied itinerary can be adjusted to suit your driving skills, stay duration and interests.

In addition to enjoying the sights and sounds of Oman’s bustling cities and towns, you’ll drive across beautiful coastlines consisting of tidal bays, small and large beaches, and dunes. The Bimmah Sinkhole should be another stop on your itinerary, with its crystal-clear waters and elaborate cave system making it an impressive sight to behold.
