The days may be getting longer as spring approaches, but with visibility remaining poor and the weather far from ideal, embracing life on the brighter side is what we’d recommend. There are many advantages to fine-tuning your lighting rig, with the improved visibility, increased safety, durability and style 4×4 lighting brings undeniable.

There are several lighting upgrades to choose from. Here we take a closer look at the differences between LED light bars, spotlights and flood lights to help you discover the right lighting addition for your vehicle.

LED light bars

LED lights bars don’t just look impressive, they provide plenty of illumination to help light the way. High spec and made for work or play, LED lighting products go beyond the basic to deliver a customisable option that can be set to your exact preferences. We’ll let Uneedabricks explain more about how an LED bar differs from traditional headlights, especially when used in an off-road environment:

“For 4×4 enthusiasts looking to enhance their off-road experience via improved visibility and performance, (LED) lights have been increasingly popular and have become a piece of essential equipment. LED light bars provide a bright, focused beam of light by concentrating a large number of powerful LEDs. They provide a broader and more powerful beam than traditional headlights, successfully piercing in the dark and exposing hidden obstacles; making driving extra safer!”

With strong output, better clarity, an adaptable field of view, reduced glare, longer lifespan and enhanced safety all part of the package, an LED light bar is the versatile and practical choice.

Spotlights

Boasting long reach, less light scatter and high efficiency even at a distance, spotlights are a lighting alternative with a very different use.

Unlike LED light bars, spotlights use a tight beam angle to provide a concentrated, narrow field of view. This is great for long distance visibility, and especially useful on dirt roads and desert trails where drivers have to search ahead for obstacles. It is however not so great for peripheral vision, with hazards at close range and off to the sides easily missed.

Flood lights

When comparing light bars and spotlights, it’s clear there will be some gaps in vision. For the best of both worlds, many recommend a combination of flood and spot beams. By embracing both, you’ll benefit from good, all-round coverage with spotlights providing visibility at a distance and flood lights illuminating more broadly.

Flood lights are a particularly popular choice for work. The wide, even illumination they make possible ensures tracks, ditches and obstacles close to the vehicle remain well lit and easy to negotiate. Flood lights aren’t just useful when on the go either. They’re great for completing campsite tasks after dark.
