We love the Defender, but like many iconic 4x4s, this off-roader doesn’t come without its problems, many issues of which only become apparent during longer trips!

While packed with charm, charisma and plenty of heritage, the Land Rover Defender 130’s sluggish performance, vague on-road handling, high running costs, and cramped, back to basics interior leave little to be desired. Yet, Defender drivers don’t have to put up and shut up when it comes to these challenges.

The following overland upgrades can, and should, be added to your 130 to make your Land Rover Defender more of a pleasure and less of a chore to drive long distance…

Brakes

A vehicle this good off-road needs decent brakes! And unfortunately, they don’t come as standard with Defender 1990-2016 models. Thankfully, we have an aftermarket addition that delivers ultimate braking performance for street and off-road use.

The Powerbrake X-Line Big Brake Kit comes to you from a trusted South African motorsport specialist and is designed with the Defender in mind. It ensures great braking efficiency in vehicles loaded with all manner of upgrades (including heavy duty vehicle protection), overlanding gear and freight loads.

This kit actually uses Dakar Rally-derived technology and manufacturing processes to dramatically enhance performance, boost component longevity, reduce brake fade, and improve stopping distances in both wet and dry conditions.

Fuel

You’re going to need some gear to go the distance during your overland trip. As well as carrying the right equipment and supplies, stocking up on extra fuel could save you a lot of hassle and heartache. The Long Ranger Diesel Fuel Tank offers 120 extra litres to play with, making it a must-have for remote area and long distance travel.

Storage

Make the most of every inch of your 130’s interior by fitting an ARB Outback Modular Drawer Storage System inside your vehicle.

This premium, configurable storage solution is ideal for overland travel and commercial use. Its modular design means drawers are able to be stacked as well as arranged with other accessories and upgrades (such as load barriers, fridges and fridge slides) to create the perfect storage setup.

Air con

Adding aftermarket AC to your Defender is essential. The model after all doesn’t come with factory air conditioning, with systems needing to be retrofitted to keep you and your passengers cool on the open road. The CoolTech AC Air Conditioning Kit offers a complete solution for the Land Rover Defender. It’s also super easy to install!

Suspension

As you may have already noticed, driving on road is a significantly different experience than travelling off the road in the Defender 130 as Honest John describes:

“As for the ride and handling, there is some of each, though you would be a brave soul to push the Defender very hard round a corner. Hit a bump in the road and you will be wholly aware of what effect it is having on your spine. The only defence of the Defender here is the suspension copes brilliantly off-road and offers super axle articulation.”

You can enjoy the best of both worlds however by upgrading your Defender’s suspension. For the best results, choose our Old Man Emu OME Ultimate BP-51 Suspension Lift Kit.
