While we might like to think we know everything there is to know about our 4x4s, would most of us even be able to tell the difference between earlier and more recent model revisions? In our eyes, the answer is almost always a resolute yes, as long as you know what to look for, of course.

However, if you’re going to be giving your ride an upgrade with some functional and practical new suspension or even some sturdier underbody protection, you need to know exactly what model variant you own. Because while the difference might seem on the surface to be little more than an ascending number of a few extra letters, sometimes the difference in the build is so pronounced that an upgrade made for one version simply won’t fit another.

We’re going to start by focusing on one of the off-roading world’s most popular rides – the Ford Ranger T6. This consistently popular model has been around since 2011 and is very popular amongst 4×4 enthusiasts from all walks of life.

Knowing your number

The Ford Ranger has been one the best-selling pickup trucks in the UK for years now, and with good reason. It’s a powerhouse vehicle with some great creature comforts and industry-leading features.

There are also numerous model options to choose from and it’s vital that you know exactly what model you have in your garage before ordering any upgrades. The original PX was manufactured between 2011 and 2015, the PX2 between 2015 and 2019 and the PX3 from 2019 onwards. The Ranger model code is the T6. The ranger is also sometimes referred to as the T7 and T8 to represent the PX2 and PX3 respectively, although this is not used officially by Ford.

There are various diesel engine types available throughout the UK and EU. There is also a range of model variants such as the Raptor, the Wildtrak and the XLT or “Extra Luxurious Truck” version. All models also have various cab configurations to consider, including single cab, crew cab and the more popular dual cab.

You’ll notice the above three Ford Ranger PX models. As you’ll see in the picture example above, the front of the cars are all dramatically different on all three models. On the PX1 and PX2, for example, the grill is drastically different. The fog lights are also all different.

Getting the right part for the right model

When it comes to fitting suspension upgrades, many will only be compatible with a specific platform and this is where suspension upgrade kits come in. These kits have been engineered specifically to fit a very unique frame. Not only that, but depending on your weight loading and usage, there are also going to be considerations to make.

This, in a nutshell, is why it’s so vital that you do your research before making any upgrade purchases and ensure your model variant is compatible with the kit you’re buying. It’s something that will take you literally seconds to check but it could end up saving you a lot of money and even more headaches.

Unfortunately, you can’t tell a model simply from a badge or even from an engine; it requires a little more detective work than that. But it’s a little work that will lead to major results.
