There is, of course, a right way to build an overland truck and there is a wrong way. Every overland truck build however begins with careful planning, with the model you choose to construct directly correlating with its off-road capabilities.

With this in mind, overland truck builds generally fall into three categories – mild, moderate and extreme. In this blog post, we take a closer look at each so you can craft your overland truck to perfection.

Mild

If you have a newer 4×4 vehicle that you are looking to upgrade, a mild overland build may be the best option.

As the name suggests, mild builds use minimal upgrades to ensure the vehicle can be used for light green laning as well as on paved roads. Mild modifications on more modern makes and models mean you can embrace the best of both worlds as a 4×4 driver. You get to take advantage of performance-enhancing upgrades without stifling the technological advancements that newer 4x4s are celebrated for.

Using suspension kits to enable better control across rougher terrain is recommended for mild overland builds. Hidden winch mounts equipped with Warn winches can also be used in mild truck builds to house concealed recovery gear that gets you out of some sticky situations during those off-road adventures.

Moderate

Moderate builds are equally suited to older and more modern 4x4s, with many of these platforms providing the ideal bases for more complex, heavier upgrades.

Again suspension upgrades are useful. When upgrading your suspension, choose taller systems with lengthier shocks to ensure larger tyres can be accommodated. It’ll give your tyres the room to articulate its axles correctly and in turn boost your vehicle’s overall performance.

Moderate builds can include roof racks for improved storage on the go. Winch bumpers should also be added for additional protection and to accommodate the touring essentials (i.e. driving lights, winches and CB antennas etc.) that make driving safer in more rugged, off-road environments.

Extreme

Vehicles that provide something of a blank canvas can be easily upgraded for adventure with an extreme build. The Land Cruiser 80 and 100 Series, and the Jeep Wrangler are models made for the hardcore modifications that allow you to take on the toughest trails.

Suspension, winch and bumper upgrades should all be a part of your extreme build. The fitting of an extreme brake kit will also deliver the braking boost you need when driving hard or with additional, permanent weight, whilst reducing fade, improving component life and ensuring reliability for your heavy, modified vehicle.

You can take your vehicle performance to the next level, even in off-road or low traction situations, with an EVC Throttle Controller.

Manor Racing explains more about the benefits of throttle controllers, advantages that could help you enjoy greater control across various terrains:

“So, what does a throttle controller do? It is a device that is designed basically to help out with improving the pedal engine’s response. The addition of a throttle tuner will let you customize the response of the gas pedal, and thus the acceleration of your vehicle will also be customizable.”
