Tougher was founded in 2022 in Cape Town, South Africa, by Mark and Tatum Loftus. A husband and wife team, Mark and Tatum met on the banks of the Orange River in South Africa, when they were both working as river tour guides.

As a pair of experienced adventurers and travellers, they both had a passion for camping and overlanding. Naturally, after years of working in related industries, the idea formed of making high quality vehicle interior products.

With Mark taking charge of the production and product development side of the business and Tatum running the office, a team of experienced machinists, pattern makers and customer service staff slowly formed. The business has always been passionate about making traditional, artisan products, which can be used in a variety of settings and environments.

By manufacturing their own products in house, Tougher have been able to control the entire process, from design and material selection to testing and marketing. Friends and family have often been involved in “real world” product testing, including builders, farmers, adventure users, contractors, electricians and plumbers. South African campers and overlanders demand high quality gear, and Mark’s designs have helped to protect and organise vehicle interiors across the country and beyond.

Whether using a vehicle for leisure, adventure, trade or just day to day use, it is easy to soil or damage the often fragile interior surfaces and fabrics which are used in modern vehicles such as the Hilux, Ranger, Land Cruiser or Grenadier. Rough looking interiors harm the value of a vehicle and are unsightly. By adding proper protection, the interior can be kept looking fresh for much longer. Whilst some customers fit their covers for work or travel only, others leave them in place at all times, not just for the sake of protection but to benefit from the multitude of pockets which Tougher incorporate in all of their designs.

Items such as spare water, phones, torches, tools and maps do not always have a dedicated home in vehicle interiors, and can therefore end up scattered on the seats or floor, inaccessible and out of reach. The addition of front, side and rear pockets for many designs allows to better organisation of equipment so it is easy to find when needed. Many pockets feature elastic or zippers and storage areas are wide and deep enough for many commonly carried items.

A recent range addition has been the Tougher Dashboard Cover. Made from the same breathable poly cotton as Tougher seat covers, this innovative product protects the dashboard from UV and other damage whilst offering several useful storage compartments for devices and cables. Naturally, all products are designed to work with standard vehicle features such as airbags and equipment.
