Rhino-Man was founded in 2013 in Pretoria, South Africa, by Ferdie van der Merwe. Already an industry veteran with extensive design and fabrication experience, van der Merwe decided to focus on one particular product which he saw as a weak spot in the 4WD market – the hard top.
Hard tops for pickup trucks, also commonly referred to as canopies, are one of the largest 4×4 accessories available, and one of the most expensive. From their origins as a loose canvas cover supported by a tubular frame, demand has grown and grown to the point where his simple device is one of the two most common pickup truck upgrades (alloy wheels being the other).
For the past two decades, hard tops have become a necessary part of life for most pickup owners, from farmers and agricultural users to leisure and adventure travellers, businesses and fleet operators. Without the benefit of a hard top, items transported in the load bed are exposed to the elements and also to prying eyes. This might not be such an issue to a farmer or tree surgeon, but it is far from ideal for overland and adventure travel. Whenever the vehicle needs to be left unattended, or whenever it might be used in less than ideal weather, a canopy is a must-have.
The original, and still arguable the best known type of canopy is made of GRP (fibreglass) or ABS (plastic). Whilst these materials are relatively lightweight, they are often not durable and do not cope well with heavy users. Another issue with these materials is load capability – many hard tops from brands such as Truckman can only support around 25kg on the roof, so a roof rack or roof tent is out of the question.
Rhino-Man took the basic design of the hard top to a new level. Manufacturing his own complete product was enough of a challenge, but van den Merwe set out to create something which could handle just about anything which a user might want to carry – whether inside the canopy or on the roof. Van den Merwe chose to build his canopies from automotive grade aluminium, for both strength and lightweight. Initial units were offered for models such as the Hilux, Navara, Ranger, Land Cruiser 79 Series and D-Max.
After more than a decade of developing and refining the range, Rhino-Man can now offer a premium quality hard top solution for many pickup trucks, with a choice of options. Side and rear windows are available, along with gull wing doors and even options to have the hard tops painted to match your vehicle colour.
In many parts of the world, Rhino-Man hard tops are the product of choice for overland travel. They are super-durable and well built, with high quality finishing and fittings throughout. Distribution and spare parts are now available in Europe, Australia, USA and beyond.
