Powerbrake was founded in 2000 in South Africa. Initially, the business focused on motorsport applications and did not actively develop products for street users – let alone for the 4WD market. However, that changed in 2009 when Nissan Motorsport approached Powerbrake to develop a 6-piston off-road brake caliper for the Navara, which Nissan Motorsport would then use in the Dakar Rally.

As the company did not have any purpose-built race car calipers available to suit Nissan’s requirements, they set out to develop a new product from the ground up. Using all the experience they had gained over the past few years in motorsport, Powerbrake were able to develop an industry-leading caliper and this was used in 2010 and 2011 by Nissan with good results.

In 2012, Powerbrake were asked to supply a similar brake kit to Toyota Motorsport SA, and the success of this program led to Toyota ordering hundreds of sets from Powerbrake. This same kit went on to be used by specialist motorsport and military builders in several countries, and is now long-proven to offer exceptional braking and outstanding durability.

When creating an off road rig or overland build, it is almost inevitable that the vehicle’s constant weight will increase significantly. Bumpers and bull bars, side protection and rock sliders, canopies, roof racks, larger wheels and tyres will all contribute to taking the vehicle closer and closer to its GVW. Commercial vehicles such as the Hilux, Navara and Ranger do not have high performance brakes from the factory, and adding a lot of weight (or increasing the vehicle’s performance) can take the brakes beyond the point where they are adequately useful and into that grey area where they may not in face even meet legal requirements for safe braking.
