MAXTRAX was launched in Queensland, Australia, in 2005 by Brad McCarthy. Brad became well-known as an author in the early 2000’s, penning Dirty Weekends: The Essential 4WD Guides and writing for various magazines. Shortly after bringing the product to market, the company won the coveted Australian 4WD Monthly award for Best New Product under $500.

McCarthy came up with the idea for the product in 2001 after an incident when solo travelling in north Queensland which he has said he will always remember vividly. He was driving on a remote beach and suddenly became aware of the incoming tide when he god bogged down in the wet sand. Although he was equipped with the usual 4WD recovery gear, he barely managed to escape from the beach with his vehicle and possessions intact; a few more minutes and the tide would have washed his rig away.

After his near escape, Brad realised that traditional recovery products such as metal sand ladders were simply not up to the task of self-recovering in mud and snow. His work meant that research expeditions were necessary and he often enjoyed travelling alone in remote areas, but he could not risk losing his vehicle or having to abandon it in remote or unsafe locations.

The following three years were spent mulling over design concepts, researching materials and manufacturing processes, studying the industry and finally coming up with a working prototype for what is now such a coming sight in the 4×4 world. MAXTRAX was born.

Often referred to by names such as recovery boards, sand ladders or self-extraction devices, this unique and now much imitated product was flexible enough to bend around the profile of a tyre but strong enough to be used again and again without breakage or failure.

MAXTRAX became well known across Australia quickly, and Brand and his new team worked tirelessly to fine-tune the stud design and material composition. Final production versions were made from engineering grade nylon, a relatively expensive material, and huge moulds were produced to allow for volume production. As word spread, companies such as ARB, TJM, and various retail store chains took stock of the product. Requests were made for alternative colours, and the initial choice of black or orange expanded to include 9 new colours.

Within 5 years, the product was sold in more than 30 countries from the USA to Peru, Ukraine, Norway and South Africa. Customers included explorers, government departments, military, fire services, lifeguards, tour operators, and the United Nations.

In late 2010, Brad launched the latest and most advanced MAXTRAX product, the MAXTRAX MKII. This was the company’s benchmark product and included new stud designs, new colours, and extensive range of accessories, and a clever shovel design built into both ends of every board. This product two major awards at SEMA in Las Vegas.

4×4 Works are proud to be UK distributor and retailer of the MAXTRAX product range. We believe this to be the best and most durable self recovery board brand available worldwide and we supply them to business and leisure users across Europe and beyond.
