Long Ranger Automotive was established in 1976 by the owner of Out Of Town 4WD, Fred Black. From their early days working out of Fred’s back yard in Wangi, New South Wales, Australia, it quickly became apparent that there was a strong demand for larger capacity fuel tanks.

Australia is such a vast country, with more than 500,000 miles of roads and a huge number of remote tracks and passes. In the 1970s, many drivers would not even consider crossing the country by vehicle unless they had a suitably tough 4WD such as a Land Cruiser; and these vehicles were far from fuel efficient with their large and powerful engines.

Thankfully, vehicle manufacturers were making life fairly easy for Fred and his team. Many vehicle models were bring built with much smaller tanks than the vehicles could accommodate, in part because the manufacturers were sharing components such as petrol and diesel tanks across different models as they looked for ways to build vehicles more economically. In fact, some models at the time could feasibly be equipped with fuel tanks which would nearly double the carried fuel capacity – without compromising much on ground clearance.

By 1979, Long Ranger relocated to a service station in Argenton, NSW, and in 1986 the company purchased brand new premises in nearby Barnsley. Since establishing in the town, they have become a major employer in the area.

Throughout the 1980’s, the company grew and grew and Fred worked tirelessly to bring in every vehicle model he could get his hands on and to test and develop new products. From an initial focus on replacement main diesel tanks, the company were now developing main petrol tanks, sub and auxiliary tanks, and later a range of water tanks was launched with great success.

Over the years, the kits became more sophisticated and new features included laser-cut fitting hardware, fuel transfer pumps, small and unobtrusive dash-mounted gauges, replacement filler panels and necks, and much more besides. Thanks to a strong workforce and as a result of their rural roots, virtually every part was designed, developed and manufactured in house.

By the late 1990s, Long Ranger tanks were being sold in every continent, with a growing list of dealers, distributors and even vehicle manufacturers and converters, selling and fitting these durable and high-capacity tanks. LRA had become the world market leaders in their field and the company was working harder than ever to develop a range of options for every new 4WD model.

From Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser models, to the Ranger, D-Max, Patrol, L200, Navara, Amarok, Land Rover Defender and Discovery, Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, LRA have a high capacity tank for your next expedition or adventure. LRA tanks are just as at home on the farm or on the highway as they are in the Sahara or the Australian Outback.
