Gobi-X Expedition Gear was founded in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2011 by Chris Ingham. Already an experienced product designer and CAD developer, Ingham was a keen off-road and overlanding enthusiast with an clear vision of what makes a quality 4WD upgrade. Unable to find the exact upgrades he needed for his latest 4×4 build, Ingham set out to develop what became South Africa’s best known range of body protection products.
Off-road conditions in southern Africa can be harsh, dry and unforgiving. Rocky trails abound and hazards are everywhere. With the risk of animal strikes and the possibility of rock damage to sills, tyres and underbody, sometimes it takes more than just good driving technique to make it home from a weekend trip.
The first Gobi-X products focused on protecting the front and rear of vehicles such as the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series and Hilux. Heavy duty bull bars and rear step bumpers were in high demand in South Africa, but the market was dominated by high-priced Australian and American imports or low-grade far eastern products. Due to high import costs and taxes, the import market was dominated by several brands, selling at prices which were out of the reach of most consumers. However, by manufacturing locally, Gobi-X were able to find a balance between quality and price-point which enabled southern African adventurers and fleet users to properly protect their vehicles and minimise damage and down-time.
Over time, the Gobi-X product range grew to include a range of side protection or rock sliders. This product bolts to the vehicle’s frame and offers protection from sill damage caused by debris or rocks. Some rock sliders simply protect the sill area, but Gobi-X designed their product to incorporate side steps with a tubular design and CNC-cut step plates.
Other additions to the product range have included underbody protection plates, wiring kits and other accessories.
As the bumper range grew, Gobi-X saw increasing demand for carrier bumpers. This practical product provides a robust steel rear protection bumper with integrated carriers for mounting spare wheels, jerry cans, storage boxes and more. It is important that these items are properly secured when driving off road, and a carrier bumper allows for these items to be safely carried without taking up space inside the vehicle or in the bed of a pickup truck. Gobi-X Carrier bumpers can be seen across southern Africa, on defence vehicles, overland builds and commercial trucks.
