For several decades, automotive engines have been required by law in most regions to feature a Positive Crankcase Ventillation or PCV system. When combustion is taking place, positive pressure builds up in the crankcase and needs to be relieved. Automotive manufacturers used to simply release this pressure into the environment, but from the 1970s onwards this became illegal, initially in the USA, as the released gases contain harmful pollutants in the form of oil vapours. Therefore, the PCV system was developed to allow this oil and air mixture to re-enter the engine to be burned for a second time. Now, instead of burning clean air, your engine is burning dirty, oil contaminated air, and this air contaminates every surface it comes into contact with, leaving sludge and build up which causes engine failures over time.

To combat the problem, the Catch Can was developed and has been a common automotive upgrade for decades. Now, the dirty air is routed through a filter unit containing a sump, a special filter, an inlet and an outlet. Eventually, the sump fills with oil and is drained by the user, or when the vehicle is serviced. Research shows that when this type of filter is used, engine component life can be dramatically increased and fuel consumption is reduced, meaning that the Catch Can will more than pay for itself over time.

This genuine Ryco spare part enables you to easily replace your Catch Can filter. It is important to use a genuine replacement filter to ensure correct operation of the Catch Can without pressure build up or oil fume bypass.
